PPG's Kathryn Shaffer to present advancement in edge corrosion protection at 2019 CoatingsTech Conference

Published: April 1, 2019

Presentation covers development of industry’s first one-coat, direct-to-metal powder coating.

PITTSBURGH, April 1, 2019 – PPG (NYSE:PPG) today announced that Kathryn Shaffer, PPG senior development chemist, industrial coatings, will present a paper titled "Advances in Edge Protection for Powder Coatings" at the 2019 CoatingsTech Conference in Cleveland on April 8.

Shaffer's paper will illustrate how PPG researchers formulated the industry's first one-coat, direct-to-metal powder coating, resulting in a new benchmark for corrosion protection of sharp edges created during metal fabrication.

In addition to detailing the multi-faceted approach used to create the coating, Shaffer will present test results from lab work and field trials to demonstrate how the technology performs three functions that had never before been achieved together in a product of this type. The functions are:

  • Applying a consistent, uniform film build on the laser-cut edges of metal parts using electrostatic spray equipment;
  • Maintaining a uniform film build on laser-cut edges throughout the baking/curing process; and
  • Providing exceptional levels of corrosion protection though rigorous salt spray testing and field trials.

Sponsored by the American Coatings Association (ACA), the CoatingsTech Conference is held in alternating years to inform coatings professionals about the most innovative technologies and applications shaping the industry, as well as regulatory trends and networking opportunities. Coatings Tech 2019 is being held at the Westin Cleveland Downtown hotel, April 8-10.
